This summer, I'll be interning full-time from June to August. Besides interning, I have some other personal goals that I’d like to make progress on.
I took a class in Computer Systems last semester, and learning about how multithreading allows you to get a process done by having multiple threads tackle it concurrently was really cool. I've listened to some podcasts on parallel computing and notably how tasks can be divided into many subtasks and we can have all these subtasks attack a problem concurrently. I want to understand how parallel computing works conceptually and also explore practical applications through CUDA.
My experience in machine learning has been pretty scattered thus far. I've trained and built models, taken intro AI courses in school, and built various ML-based applications like a flight delay prediction app and some image classification apps. Still, I feel like there's a lot of room to grow here, and I'd like to use this time to really dive deep into it, with a systematic, first-principles approach.
This one's pretty simple. I need to be cracked and ready for next recruiting cycle. Plus, understanding data structures and algorithms is an important skill, so can't go wrong with practicing.
I've always loved making videos. I made Minecraft videos and vlogged 10 years ago in elementary and middle school. I took a long hiatus, but I've realized I can never really stop making videos. For the past few months, I've been filming some "Day in the Life" videos which I've been uploading on Instagram Reels. The goal is to keep making these videos, build my personal brand, and just keep having fun. 10k followers is an arbitrary, ambitious goal, but why not go for it?
I started running cross country and track in sixth grade. I've run a lot of miles since then, but I've never really been able to get into lifting. When I used to go to the gym, my lifts were always functionally focused on improving running mechanics. This summer I want to "lift for lifting" and see where that takes me. I will say, though, I genuinely like running and I don't want to lose the endurance I've built all these years. So I've set a goal of being able to run a mile in under five minutes at the end of the summer. How I will do this, I am not exactly sure and it's not something I want to focus on, but I'm keeping it here because it will be a good reason to not completely stop running.
I’ll be documenting my progress towards these goals on @sohum.life. Follow along :)
